Dave Bautista to Play Kratos in God of War Series; Amazon to Reshoot Completed Episodes

Actor and former wrestler Dave Bautista (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Dune”) has been cast as Kratos in Amazon MGM Studios’ adaptation of the video game God of War. According to Variety, he replaces Ryan Hurst, who had to leave the project due to a serious injury.
Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt on set. Given the lengthy recovery period, the studio decided to recast the role rather than halt production until 2027.
Extensive Reshoots and the Norse Pantheon Cast
The lead actor’s injury has led to significant financial and logistical costs. Before the incident, the crew had fully shot about four episodes — now all scenes featuring Kratos will need to be reshot with Bautista.
Amazon plans to shoot both ordered seasons back-to-back in Vancouver. Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, “Outlander”) serves as showrunner.
In a People article, the current cast of the adaptation is listed:
- Callum Vinson — Atreus;
- Mandy Patinkin — Odin;
- Ólafur Darri Ólafsson — Thor;
- Ed Skrein — Baldur;
- Teresa Palmer — Sif;
- Danny Woodburn and Jeff Garlin — the dwarves Brok and Sindri.
Norse Era Storyline
The series’ plot on Prime Video will not cover the Spartan’s Greek period, but will focus on the events of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. The story will center on the journey of the hardened Kratos and his son Atreus to the highest point of the Nine Realms to scatter Faye’s ashes.
The premiere date for the first season of God of War has not been announced yet.
