TeamSpeak 6 adds 4K streaming, new interface, and Picture-in-Picture mode as it prepares for serverless direct calls

TeamSpeak developers continue the global transformation of the client, turning a niche voice chat into a full-fledged competitor to modern communication platforms. As part of the TeamSpeak 6 Beta testing, the app now supports 4K streaming at 60 FPS, a redesigned interface, Picture-in-Picture mode, and functionality for direct one-on-one calls.

The latest test build is already available for download on the official TeamSpeak website.

Screen streaming in 4K/60 FPS and hardware optimization

The key difference in the sixth version is the ability to broadcast your desktop, individual windows, and webcams. The system supports streaming at resolutions up to 4K at 60 frames per second with manual bitrate adjustment.

In recent updates Foundation I and Foundation II, the developers significantly optimized the network and graphics components:

  • implemented FFmpeg hardware acceleration using GPU resources;
  • optimized video stream rendering;
  • set up P2P data transfer with single video encoding, reducing CPU and RAM load during gaming sessions.

Modern interface and Picture-in-Picture multi-streams

TeamSpeak 6’s interface has undergone a complete redesign. Users now have access to custom themes, the ability to switch to system fonts, and an updated text editor with support for Markdown, Mermaid diagrams, formulas, and tables.

Additionally, the developers introduced a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature. This mode lets you pin up to four streams or webcams on top of the main fullscreen window and position them in the corners of the screen, which is handy for keeping an eye on teammates’ screens in co-op games.

Direct Calls without servers

The main architectural shift will be direct calls. We previously detailed the preparation for the biggest change in 20 years, and now the TeamSpeak team has shown Direct Calls in action for the first time.

The feature lets you call contacts directly over P2P in the style of classic messengers, completely eliminating the need to create or rent a dedicated server. Direct Calls is currently in closed alpha testing and will appear in public TeamSpeak 6 builds a bit later.
