PS5 Pro Completely Sells Out in US After GTA VI Reveal: Stock Gone Even at Sony as Scalper Prices Surge to $1,300

A massive gameplay reveal for Grand Theft Auto VI has sparked a total shortage of flagship PlayStation 5 Pro consoles across the US market. The hardware sold out not only at major retail chains but also on the official PlayStation Direct store, while scalpers on reseller markets have jacked up prices to $1,200–$1,300, compared to the MSRP of $899.99.
Widespread Shortage: Stock Runs Out Even at Sony Itself
Console availability in the US deteriorated rapidly over several days. As reported by GamesRadar+, retail giants Best Buy and Target were the first to mark the console as “out of stock.” On Best Buy’s website, the system was moved to the High Demand Product category featuring a virtual queue system.
Direct stock at Amazon and Walmart quickly ran out next, leaving only third-party listings with 33–44% markups. According to an updated report from Push Square, by August 30, available stock completely dried up even at Sony’s official US online storefront, PlayStation Direct, which had been offering shipments at MSRP until the very end.
The Impact of 27 Minutes of Gameplay and a Marketing Slogan
The catalyst for the demand surge was the release of an extended, nearly 30-minute gameplay trailer, GTA VI: An Extended Look from Rockstar Games. The footage consisted entirely of in-game open-world gameplay set in the state of Leonida, captured on a base PlayStation 5.
Interest in the high-end console revision was further fueled by marketing positioning: the official GTA VI website features a banner reading “Plays Best on PlayStation 5”. Gamers’ desire to experience peak visual quality led to a rush on Pro models, which feature a more powerful GPU and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) AI upscaling.
Will PS5 Pro Deliver the Coveted 60 FPS?
Despite the hype, analysts urge buyers not to overpay scalpers based on unrealistic technical expectations.
As noted by Tom’s Hardware, Rockstar developers explicitly confirmed during private briefings that at launch, all console versions target a baseline 30 FPS. Digital Foundry experts emphasize that the primary bottleneck for achieving 60 frames per second is not the GPU, but the CPU cores, which are heavily taxed by complex simulations of dense traffic and hundreds of independent NPCs.
As a result, the main advantages of the PS5 Pro version will be sharper image clarity thanks to PSSR, improved ray-traced reflections, and stable frame rates without dips, rather than a guaranteed doubling of the frame rate.
Pricing and Approaching Launch
The official MSRP for the PS5 Pro in the US is $899.99 (adjusted as part of Sony’s spring price policy update), while the base PS5 costs $649.99, and the Digital Edition is $599.99.
Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Digital pre-downloads will open on November 12, with physical boxed copies also arriving in stores a week before launch containing digital codes inside, allowing buyers time to download the game in advance. Analysts expect Sony to partially replenish official retail inventory ahead of November.
