Wallace & Gromit Creators to Release Stop-Motion Pokémon Series on Disney+

British animation studio Aardman Animations and The Pokémon Company have released a new trailer for their joint animated project, Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu. The show features Aardman’s signature stop-motion puppet technique, with a global premiere set for 2027 exclusively on Disney+.

Sir Sirfetch’d and His Squire Pichu

The story takes place in the Galar region (known to players from Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield). The plot centers on the duo of Sirfetch’d, a noble yet clumsy knight, and his energetic squire Pichu as they travel through wild lands to rescue Pokémon in trouble.

According to the official franchise website, Tom Parkinson serves as director. Under his vision, Sirfetch’d tries his best to live up to the image of Galar’s ideal protector, while little Pichu often proves far more sensible and saves his partner from comical scrapes.

Pokémon XP Showcase and New Characters

A new trailer and behind-the-scenes footage were shown at the Pokémon XP festival in San Francisco, which is taking place alongside the Pokémon World Championships 2026 esports tournament.

The creators confirmed that the snowy Crown Tundra location and the Pokémon Obstagoon will appear in the series. They also showcased physical set models, miniature trees, and puppet armatures used on set.

A Tactile World Without Trainers

The main defining feature of Pokémon Tales is that its narrative focuses entirely on the monsters themselves, with no human characters or trainers involved:

• Handmade Craftsmanship: Instead of CGI, Aardman relies on frame-by-frame shooting of physical figurines with articulated metal armatures inside;
• Signature Style: The series inherits the aesthetic of the studio’s classic hits (“Chicken Run,” “Shaun the Sheep”), emphasizing expressive facial expressions, physical comedy, and tactile environmental textures.

According to The Pokémon Company’s press release, the series is being developed as part of a long-term partnership with Disney, enabling a simultaneous release across all countries where Disney+ is available.
