Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta Launches with Campaign Mission and Nintendo Switch 2 Version

Activision and Infinity Ward have launched the open beta for military shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. From August 28 through September 1, players on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2 console can try the game for free—no pre-orders or special keys required.

A Series First: Campaign Mission Included in Open Beta

The biggest addition to the beta test is access to a full single-player campaign mission titled Entrenched. This marks the first time in Call of Duty history that single-player content has been made available to the public prior to the official launch.

As reported by GameLuster, the campaign premise centers around a full-scale invasion of the Korean Peninsula by North Korean forces. Players experience the conflict through the eyes of a young South Korean recruit named Pak. Meanwhile, the storyline introduces Captain Price, who is conducting his own covert operation outside official military channels. In the full release, mission locations will expand to New York, Paris, and Mumbai.

Dynamic Kill Block Arena and Multiplayer Modes

According to the official Call of Duty blog, the second beta weekend significantly expands the multiplayer content lineup:

  • Classic 6v6 Multiplayer: Six maps, including RooftopsSilkwormTransit 213CachetteLithium, and Kill Block;
  • Large-Scale Battles: Ground War: Combat Outpost mode;
  • Battle Royale: Warzone Resurgence mode on the new Zodiac map;
  • Progression: Level cap set at Rank 30, with unlocked unique beta rewards carrying over to the full game.

Of particular interest is Kill Block, a modular arena that shifts architecture right during the match. The map features moving sections that create hundreds of configurations. In Gunfight mode (in 3v3 and the new 10v10 formats), the layout of walls and passages randomly reshapes every two rounds, forcing teams to adapt their tactics on the fly.

Full Native Release on Nintendo Switch 2

The test marks the franchise’s debut on the Nintendo Switch 2. Unlike cloud versions of previous years, the hybrid console port is being developed by Digital Legends as a native build with full support for all modes, including the campaign and Warzone.

Release Date and Abandoning Previous Gen

According to the official Activision portal, the full release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026, on PC (Steam, Battle.net, Xbox app), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Versions for last-gen PS4 and Xbox One consoles have been canceled. At launch, players will get a revamped DMZ mode and 12 original 6v6 multiplayer maps.
