Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta Features First-Ever Campaign Mission, 6 Maps, and Procedural Arena With 500+ Variations

Developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision have launched early access to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta. From August 21 to 25, access is open to players who pre-ordered on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S via the official Call of Duty website. The full global release of the game is scheduled for October 23, 2026.

The biggest surprise for the franchise is the inclusion of campaign content in the test build: for the first time in Call of Duty public beta history, players can play a full story mission, Entrenched, which details events of a large-scale conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

Multiplayer and the Procedurally Assembled Kill Block Map

Beyond the campaign mission, the beta build offers six multiplayer maps (Transit 213, Silkworm, Rooftops, Cachette, Lotus, Kill Block), nine competitive modes, and progression for 19 weapons.

The Kill Block arena is drawing the most attention. As detailed in a PlayStation Blog post, the map has no fixed layout:

  • Before each match, the system randomly combines three modular sections (Slabs) into a single map;
  • The module pool uses recognizable segments from iconic maps in previous titles—Crash, Shoot House, and Storage Town;
  • The developers claim more than 500 possible configurations for the arena, while in Gunfight mode, the map can procedurally rebuild itself right between rounds.

Updated Matchmaking and DMZ Mode Expansion

In the beta, Activision is testing a new matchmaking system previously trialed in Black Ops 7. The algorithm reduces wait times and optimizes network ping by accounting for geography, party size, crossplay settings, and player skill levels. For comparison, the developers have also kept classic Open Matchmaking.

Additionally, the studio is planning a major comeback for DMZ mode. According to a detailed breakdown on the developer blog, its foundation will be the Hajin Exclusion Zone on the Korean-Russian border—one of the largest maps in series history, featuring dynamic weather, faction contracts, and an expanded exfiltration system.

The second test phase begins August 28 and will unlock the Zodiac map for Warzone’s Resurgence mode.
