Tesla is preparing to bring its purpose-built two-seater Cybercab electric vehicle to public roads. The autonomous vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals, with the first passenger rides in Austin, Texas, set to launch before the end of August 2026.

The vehicle was designed from the ground up purely for autonomous travel, offering no option for manual driver override.

Launch Rollout and Event Ticket Sweepstakes

According to Reuters, the vehicles will initially begin carrying Tesla employees on the streets of Austin. A few days later, the Cybercab will be integrated into the main fleet of the Robotaxi app, opening rides to the general public.

Preparations for the public launch are further evidenced by the Cybercab Launch Event sweepstakes: passengers who hail a Tesla robotaxi in Texas between August 17 and August 23 will automatically be entered into a drawing for tickets to the unveil event. Winners will be selected on August 25.

Production at Gigafactory Texas and Safety Measures

Assembly of production units is already underway at the company’s Gigafactory Texas facility. Removing the driver’s seat and streamlining production are intended to significantly lower the cost per ride. In complex traffic scenarios, remote teleoperators can step in to assist control of the vehicle.

As noted by The Verge, Tesla conducted dedicated training sessions for Austin emergency responders and police officers prior to the launch, focusing on safely handling vehicles without traditional steering controls during traffic accidents.

The Tesla Robotaxi service has been operating in the city since June 2025, though it has relied on modified production Model Y crossovers until now. The arrival of the Cybercab will mark the first real-world test of fully button-free autonomous transport on public roads.
