4A Games has announced the release date for its post-apocalyptic shooter Metro 2039. The game will launch on February 4, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. During the State of Play presentation, the developers showcased a new gameplay trailer captured entirely on PlayStation 5 Pro at 60 frames per second.

The new entry stars a former Spartan nicknamed the Wanderer. Set several years after the ending of Metro Exodus, the story sees the Moscow metro fall under the control of a totalitarian regime called the “New Reich,” led by Order veteran Hunter. The Wanderer must return underground and infiltrate an enemy stronghold located inside a ruined dam.

Ray Tracing and 60 FPS on Consoles

The game is being developed on a new version of the proprietary 4A Engine. It is the first entry in the series designed from the ground up for hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

According to the PlayStation Blog, a 60 FPS performance mode with ray tracing enabled is confirmed not only for PS5 Pro, but also for the standard PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The developers will reveal exact resolution details later, while graphics modes for the Xbox Series S are currently undergoing optimization.

A Familiar Survival Formula

Metro 2039 remains a classic single-player story shooter with no multiplayer. The trailer showed thawing spring streets in ruined Moscow, stealth outings, and gunfights featuring familiar homemade weapons, including the Shatun rifle and the Duplet double-barreled shotgun. Players will once again have to monitor their dosimeter, swap gas mask filters, and manually clear jammed gear.

According to the game’s Steam page, pre-orders across all platforms will open before the end of 2026.
