Free Tank Shooter Tyr From Riot Games Veterans Hits Steam Early Access With 90% Positive Reviews

Tyr, a tactical free-to-play team shooter featuring heavy armored vehicles, has launched in Steam Early Access. The project comes from independent studio Stoke Games, whose core team includes veterans of Riot Games, Blizzard, and Bungie. Within days of launch, the game has already earned over 90% positive reviews on Valve’s storefront, drawing attention for its unusual blend of tank ballistics and hero shooter mechanics.
Vehicle Abilities and Ricochet Calculations
The Stoke Games team is made up of seasoned developers: studio head Veigar Buius led several League of Legends development teams, while visual effects are handled by Pierre-Luc Jacques, who previously worked on graphics for Valorant. The developers have applied their experience with competitive titles to armored vehicles: in Tyr, battles take place between teams piloting tracked and hovering tanks.
The main difference from classic simulators like World of Tanks is the pronounced dynamism and unique class-based abilities. Vehicles can make instant dashes forward and backward, activate a pulse sonar to highlight cover, or engage afterburners for a powerful ram. At the same time, the game retains an emphasis on positioning: you can adjust the hull angle on the move to present ricochet slopes to incoming fire, and enemy detection is tied to electronic warfare radius and engine noise.
A Year in Early Access and No “Gold Ammo”
At Early Access launch, Tyr on Steam offers more than 12 armored vehicles with individual module upgrade trees and five battle maps. The developers plan to keep the game in Early Access for about a year, gradually expanding the vehicle roster and adding new competitive modes.
The developers have placed particular emphasis on monetization, which often scares players away from free-to-play tank shooters. Stoke Games has publicly promised to completely exclude the sale of vehicles for real money, paid stat boosters, and premium ammunition.
The game doesn’t even have a traditional seasonal battle pass. The only paid offering at launch is an optional “Founder’s Pack” for $14.99, which includes cosmetic paint items and in-game currency. If the studio can maintain balance without pay-to-win mechanics, genre veterans have a good chance of carving out a notable niche in the session-based online game segment.
