Workplace Stress Increases Impotence Risk Tenfold: Scientists Reveal Hormonal Mechanism

Chronic psychological strain and regular overtime have been identified as direct risk factors for potency issues in young men. A study involving 826 working men aged 22 to 40 showed that critical levels of occupational stress increase the likelihood of erectile dysfunction tenfold. The findings were published in the scientific journal International Journal of Clinical Practice.
A Tenfold Gap and Five Office Environment Factors
Researchers evaluated participants’ workload based on five criteria: workday duration, level of decision-making autonomy, managerial support, peer relationships, and concern over career prospects. Simultaneously, blood tests were conducted for all participants to measure levels of cortisol, testosterone, and other key regulatory hormones.
Data analysis revealed a clear pattern:
- In the group with minimal workplace stress, dysfunction was reported in only 8% of men;
- Among participants experiencing constant high stress, erectile dysfunction was identified in 54.37% of respondents;
- After adjusting statistically for age, unhealthy habits, and body mass index, the risk of dysfunction in the high-stress group remained tenfold higher.
Hormonal Cascade: How Cortisol Suppresses Testosterone
Researchers were able to trace the precise biochemical chain of dysfunction. As noted in a press release on EurekAlert, the process does not happen instantly, but rather accumulates over time.
First, chronic anxiety leads to a steady release of the stress hormone cortisol. Two to four weeks after cortisol levels remain elevated, the endocrine system begins suppressing testosterone production. Another four to six weeks following the hormonal drop, physiological disruptions in erectile function begin to occur.
According to Medical Xpress, researchers identified irregular work hours and overtime shifts as the most damaging triggers. However, workplace psychological comfort and task autonomy acted as a compensatory mechanism, helping men maintain normal hormone levels even under heavy workloads.
The study’s authors emphasize that male potency is a multifactorial metric that depends on vascular health, sleep quality, and physical activity. However, the identified two-month cascade demonstrates that occupational burnout directly impacts the reproductive system long before organic diseases develop.
