First Day Drinker Trailer: Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz in a Crime Thriller from the John Wick Creators

Lionsgate has released the first teaser trailer for its crime thriller Day Drinker. For Johnny Depp, the film is one of his biggest Hollywood projects in recent years, bringing the actor back to big-budget studio action. Marc Webb, known for (500) Days of Summer and the two Amazing Spider-Man films, directed the movie, and The Tomorrow War writer Zach Dean wrote the script.

The story begins aboard a private yacht. According to the official synopsis on Rotten Tomatoes, a bartender played by Madelyn Cline meets a mysterious passenger named Kelly, played by Depp. The chance encounter turns deadly: the characters are drawn into a criminal network led by a powerful figure played by Penélope Cruz. As the plot unfolds, it emerges that the three characters share a hidden connection.

Action with horror elements and a proven on-screen duo

The released clip features tense shootouts, hand-to-hand fights and car chases. Online, Depp’s character has already been compared to a “drunk John Wick,” and there are production reasons for that: Thunder Road Pictures is behind the film, and the producers include Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, the team behind the cult Keanu Reeves franchise. At the same time, the filmmakers themselves describe the movie not as a classic nonstop action film but as a thriller with horror elements.

For Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, this marks a return to a proven partnership. The actors have a long history of successful on-screen collaboration: they previously appeared together in the crime drama Blow, the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and the mystery Murder on the Orient Express.

Variety reports that Day Drinker will premiere in U.S. theaters on March 26, 2027. The studio has not yet announced release dates for other regions or a digital release window.
