A Dark Plants vs. Zombies Short About Crazy Dave Is Going Viral — But It’s Not an Official EA Film

A five-minute video inspired by the classic strategy game Plants vs. Zombies is gaining traction on social media. The comedy about defending a lawn from the undead turns into a tense post-apocalyptic thriller, with the neighbor Crazy Dave as the main character. Thanks to the high-quality visuals and grim atmosphere, many users assumed the franchise’s creators were preparing a full-length film adaptation, but that’s a misconception.

Electronic Arts and PopCap had nothing to do with the video’s production. According to the series’ official website, the publisher is not currently making films based on the universe. The rights holders remain focused on supporting the games themselves — in particular the Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted remaster released in October 2025.

An absurd idea in harsh reality

The video making the rounds is an independent fan interpretation. Its viral appeal lies in the sharp contrast: the creators took a cartoonish concept and placed it in a realistic zombie-horror world. In the original game, Dave is just a comical oddball with a pot on his head who sells upgrades out of his car trunk, but in the short he’s portrayed as a traumatized loner forced to survive in a city devastated by an epidemic.

That said, calling the new video the “first PvZ adaptation” would be wrong. Fans have been making amateur films based on the game for over a decade. Back in 2011, the Hethfilms channel released a live-action adaptation that racked up over 20 million views on YouTube, and a fan film by Dusty Biscuit Films was watched more than 55 million times in 2013.

The main problem with the new video spreading on TikTok and X is the loss of credit. It’s being reuploaded en masse without attribution, mistakenly credited to official studios. It should be seen purely as a talented creative experiment by the community, showing what a beloved casual game would look like wrapped in harsh survival.
