IEM Cologne 2027 Expands Playoffs to Eight Teams, Debuts 360-Degree Stage

ESL has revealed the first details about IEM Cologne 2027 for Counter-Strike 2. The tournament will take place in Cologne from August 4 to 15, with the decisive stage once again held at LANXESS Arena. The main changes are an expanded eight-team playoff and a new stage with a 360-degree view.

A total of 24 teams will compete in the tournament for $1.25 million and a point toward the ESL Grand Slam.

The playoffs begin on August 12 and run for four days, through the final on August 15. Eight teams will advance to the decisive stage instead of six, and matches will follow a single-elimination format.

LANXESS Arena Will Host Every Quarterfinal

The expanded playoffs mean that, for the first time at a regular IEM Cologne, fans at LANXESS Arena will see every quarterfinal match, not just the later stages of the tournament.

The change was planned in advance. Back in March, ESL announced that all ESL Pro Tour tournaments in 2027 would feature an eight-team playoff.

For IEM Kraków and IEM Cologne, the organizer has also set aside up to four Wildcard invitations for teams with recently changed rosters, provided they meet the requirements of Valve’s ranking system.

The Stage Will Be Turned 360 Degrees

The main visual novelty will be a 360-degree stage at LANXESS Arena.

The playing area will be positioned so that spectators can surround it on all sides. Unlike the traditional setup, which faces one section of the stands, the new format should allow more seats to be used and integrate the arena itself more fully into the broadcast and the show.

According to PLEY, ESL expects this to increase capacity and make the matches a more cohesive experience for the audience in the arena.

After a Record-Breaking Major, the Format Was Expanded

The changes followed IEM Cologne Major 2026, which became one of the biggest tournaments in Counter-Strike history.

Peak viewership exceeded 2.75 million concurrent viewers, with total watch time reaching 100 million hours. Team Falcons won the tournament.

Against the backdrop of that interest, ESL is effectively expanding Cologne to a format whose playoff structure brings it closer to the major tournaments: eight participants will continue the fight in front of a live audience.

Pre-sale tickets for IEM Cologne 2027 are set to go on sale on October 13, 2026, with the first general-public wave on October 15. ESL will announce the full list of participants and a detailed schedule later.
