The crime action thriller Normal, starring Bob Odenkirk, has made its digital debut on HBO Max. Written by the screenwriter of “John Wick,” the film follows a small-town sheriff who is forced to take on a heavily armed criminal gang.

In the story, interim sheriff Ulysses arrives in the snowy provincial town of Normal, Minnesota, hoping for a quiet assignment after a series of personal setbacks. However, after a botched bank robbery attempt, he uncovers the town’s dark secrets, and the local police station turns out to be stocked with a military-grade arsenal.

The detective setup quickly escalates into a brutal action film with hand-to-hand combat, shootouts, and dark humor. The runtime is 91 minutes, and the movie received an R rating for its high level of violence.

Creators and Star-Studded Cast

The screenplay was written by Derek Kolstad, the creator of the “John Wick” franchise and the action film “Nobody,” who developed the story alongside Odenkirk. Ben Wheatley (“Free Fire,” “High-Rise”) took the director’s chair.

Key roles are played by Henry Winkler as the town’s corrupt mayor and Lena Headey, known for “Game of Thrones.” In a review by the Associated Press, the film was called an exemplary neo-Western that cemented Odenkirk’s status as a dangerous action hero.

Critical Reception and Streaming Resurgence

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has earned 77% positive reviews from critics and 76% from audiences. It had a quiet theatrical run: according to Box Office Mojo, the movie grossed about $6.1 million worldwide.

As /Film notes, the digital release on HBO Max gave the project a second wave of popularity, making Normal one of the top genre recommendations for fans of fast-paced crime action films.
