“Turns Off” Inflammation Genes: Scientists Uncover Unexpected Orange Juice Effect

Drinking 100% pasteurized orange juice daily can alter the activity of hundreds of genes responsible for inflammatory responses and blood pressure regulation. The findings were published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.
The study involved 20 healthy volunteers aged 21 to 36 who drank 500 ml of juice daily for 60 days. According to ScienceDaily, molecular analysis showed reduced expression of key inflammatory genes (IL6, IL1B, NLRP3), as well as the SGK1 gene, which helps control sodium levels and vascular tone.
Researchers point to citrus flavonoids, particularly hesperidin and its metabolites, as the key factor behind this biological response. Meta-analyses of clinical trials link regular intake of these compounds to a moderate reduction in the inflammatory marker CRP and improved lipid profiles.
Experimental Amounts and Nutritionists’ Advice
The study’s authors emphasize that the 500 ml daily serving was used solely within the scientific experiment to evaluate molecular responses, not as a long-term dietary recommendation.
Pasteurized and packaged juices lack fiber and contain high concentrations of simple sugars. According to guidance from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), daily fruit juice consumption should be limited to around 150 ml, with priority given to whole fruits to maintain dietary fiber intake.
