‘You’re Too Famous’: Marvel Rejected Shaquille O’Neal for ‘Avengers’ Role Due to His Instantly Recognizable Face

Four-time NBA champion and basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal revealed that he had discussed joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but studio producers declined to cast him in the “Avengers” movies. The refusal was down to his phenomenal global fame, which would have ruined audience immersion in the story.

As reported by People, Marvel Studios executives were upfront with the basketball star about their decision:

“They told me, ‘Shaq, we love you to death and would love to have you, but the second your face shows up on screen, the whole theater is just going to yell, “Hey, look, it’s Shaq!”‘”

O’Neal agreed with the reasoning, jokingly noting that his appearance proved “too famous” for a superhero role.

Dream of Fighting Iron Man and Prior Movie Experience

The basketball star has never hidden his passion for comic books. Back in 2018, while chatting with fans, he openly campaigned for a Marvel role, jokingly suggesting screenwriters set up a one-on-one fight for him against Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.

O’Neal already has experience with comic book adaptations. In 1997, Shaq starred in DC’s action film Steel, playing John Henry Irons, an engineer equipped with high-tech armor and a sledgehammer. O’Neal later admitted he would love to remake the film using modern CGI effects.

According to O’Neal, his high profile and seven-foot frame often hinder his acting career in other dramatic projects as well, as audiences instantly recognize his public persona and struggle to see past it to believe his on-screen character.
