Hackers Threaten to Release Playable GTA VI Build Using Dead Man’s Switch

The conflict surrounding massive Grand Theft Auto VI leaks has escalated into a direct cyberwar with publisher Take-Two Interactive. The anonymous group CyberLeek issued an ultimatum, claiming to possess a full working build of GTA VI that hackers are ready to leak to millions of users worldwide if legal actions and efforts to arrest them continue.
As reported by Insider Gaming, copies of the game client have already been uploaded in a decentralized manner to secured servers and independent physical storage devices across multiple countries. Seizing individual workstations or blocking specific hosts will not stop the distribution of the files.
Digital Dead Man’s Switch to Block Law Enforcement
According to GamingBible, the leakers set up an automated emergency timer (dead man’s switch).
Every morning, administrators manually reset a countdown timer set to trigger a public release of the build on torrent trackers. If the reset procedure does not occur on time—for instance, following the arrest of those involved or a physical loss of network access—the script will automatically launch a global distribution of the build to millions of computers. According to the cybercriminals, the system will remain active until Rockstar and Take-Two drop their criminal prosecution.
Confirmed Access to the Game and Subpoenas to Microsoft
The reality of the threat is backed by a series of proofs. Over the past week, seven detailed videos depicting night-time Vice City, helicopter missions, gas station robberies, and vehicle body deformation leaked online.
As Tom’s Hardware notes, key evidence of an interactive build came when a player shot the word “LEEK” onto a brick wall with an assault rifle, while tracks released in early 2025 played in the car.
In response to the massive data compromise, Take-Two issued subpoenas in US courts, requiring Microsoft and Discord to provide IP addresses, Windows hardware GUIDs, and chat logs of the suspects by September 4.
Game Preservation Ideology and Crypto Speculation
The hackers describe their actions as a “struggle for gamers’ rights,” demanding that the industry abandon digital pre-orders, maintain physical disc releases, stop cutting finished content for paid DLC, and guarantee offline access to single-player campaigns after server shutdowns. At the same time, the project is closely tied to the launch of their own crypto token, which users used to fund upcoming leaks.
Despite the unprecedented blackmail, Rockstar Games is sticking to its official marketing schedule: an expanded gameplay showcase, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, will take place on August 27 on Netflix and YouTube. The full release of the blockbuster on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles is scheduled for November 19, 2026.
