Nothing Unveils Nothing OS 5.0 on Android 17 With AI App Generation and Dedicated Glyph Menu

Nothing has officially unveiled a major update to its custom skin, Nothing OS 5.0, based on Android 17. The update features a redesigned visual style with the Geist font, a built-in no-code AI software generator called Essential Apps, and a dedicated system app for managing Glyph LED lighting.

Open beta testing for the flagship Nothing Phone (3) kicks off on August 26, 2026.

Essential Apps Generator and MCP Protocol

The main technological highlight is Essential Apps: users can define the logic of a micro-app using plain-language text prompts, after which the neural network compiles the app and pins it to the home screen.

The Essential Space hub can now automatically group files and notes into thematic Smart Collections folders and adds support for the open MCP (Model Context Protocol) standard. This allows third-party AI assistants to securely access local smartphone data with user permission. The Essential Voice module provides instant real-time speech transcription supporting over 100 languages.

Dedicated Glyph App and Android 17 Features

The signature rear lighting strip gets a dedicated system app, and users can now place an interactive Glyph Timer widget on their home screen. The UI adds Geist fonts, translucent glass widgets, Gooey and Micrographics clock styles, and multi-icon drag-and-drop support.

According to Smartprix, the update integrates key Android 17 features:

• Separated notification shade and quick settings panel;
• An updated screen capture tool and high-contrast dark theme;
• File sharing via Quick Share using a secure web link with a QR code, even to iPhone devices.

Engineers also revamped the RAM manager to reduce background process closures and improved touch layer responsiveness.

Release Schedule and Compatible Devices

The stable rollout of Nothing OS 5.0 for the Nothing Phone (3) is scheduled for mid-October 2026.

The update will then roll out in phases to the current lineup: Phone (4a), Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (3a), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (2a), and Phone (2a) Plus. First- and second-generation smartphones—Phone (1), Phone (2), and the budget CMF Phone 1—will not receive the new software release.
