Ubisoft Announces XCOM-Style Single-Player Game Rainbow Six Tactics

At Gamescom 2026, Ubisoft officially unveiled Rainbow Six Tactics, a turn-based tactical strategy game set in the Rainbow Six Siege universe. Pivoting from the competitive first-person shooter format to isometric squad control in the style of XCOM, the title will launch in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The game marks the franchise’s first single-player story-driven entry since the release of Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 in 2008.

Operator Squads and Simultaneous Breach Mechanics

Players step into the shoes of a new unit commander codenamed Six. To carry out global special operations, players assemble four-person teams selected from a pool of 15 operators from the original Siege (confirmed characters include Ash, Doc, and Glaz). Each specialist retains their class gadgets—recon drones, stim pistols, sniper scopes, and breaching charges.

The core technical feature of the turn-based battles is fully destructible environments. Walls, ceilings, and barricades can be blown open to create unexpected angles of fire and new movement corridors.

According to PC Gamer, a dedicated Breach system allows players to position squad members at various entry points and execute a synchronized room assault. The single-player campaign features over 50 story missions across the world—ranging from ancient ruins in Egypt to maximum-security Danish prisons.

Rainbow HQ Base-Building and Mario + Rabbids Developers

Between combat operations, players return to squad headquarters to process intelligence, upgrade weapons, advance skill trees, and send wounded operators to the medical bay for recovery.

Tactical encounters integrate an Order Points mechanic: accumulated command points are spent to play cards featuring special buffs, request air support, or call in emergency cover.

As Kotaku notes, development is led by Ubisoft Paris, incorporating lead game designers behind the tactical Mario + Rabbids duology and the Ghost Recon series. The publisher plans to announce the specific 2027 release date during upcoming showcases.
