4A Games Reveals Metro 2039 Gameplay: Voiced Protagonist, Hunter’s Dictatorship, and February 2027 Release

At Gamescom 2026, 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver unveiled the first major gameplay trailer for the post-apocalyptic action game Metro 2039. The trailer, titled Renegade, showcased tunnel combat, makeshift weapon customization, and a new protagonist. The game is scheduled for release in February 2027.
Following the expansive train journeys of Metro Exodus, the franchise returns to its roots—the dark, claustrophobic corridors of the Moscow Metro, with a focus on psychological survival and stealth elements.
A New Voiced Protagonist and Plot Twist
A major change is the departure from a silent protagonist: the new hero, nicknamed The Stranger, is fully voiced and actively comments on the events unfolding on screen.
According to GamingBolt, the story takes place in 2039, six years after the finale of Metro 2033. The plot was written by 4A Games in collaboration with Dmitry Glukhovsky.
Most metro stations have been united under the rule of the totalitarian New Reich, led by Hunter—the legendary Spartan from the original game. Having lived on the surface for a long time, The Stranger is forced to return underground to oppose the new regime.
Physical Interface and Weapon Tuning
As reported by TheSixthAxis, the game emphasizes tactile weapon handling. Players will assemble firearms from scavenged parts, clean mechanisms of dirt, and adjust optics, suppressors, and stocks directly in the field.
The project retains an immersive interface without a traditional HUD:
- Filter duration is tracked via a mechanical wristwatch;
- Radiation levels are read from an analog dosimeter;
- Gas mask condition is shown through cracks and fogging on the faceplate.
