Rockstar Details GTA 6 Development: Interviews with Ex-Criminals, 50 Street Artists, and a Living Vice City

Rockstar Games has shared details on the decade-long research process behind Grand Theft Auto VI. In an exclusive interview with Dazed magazine, the developers revealed that to ensure the authenticity of Vice City and the state of Leonida, they spent years conducting field interviews in Miami with former criminals, police officers, arms dealers, and club promoters.
The stories collected served as the foundation for the plot and helped avoid a stereotypical portrayal of Florida’s criminal underworld.
Field Research in Miami and Character Creation
To study the region, the company formed a specialized research team in Miami that analyzed the social environment, fashion, accents, and nightlife. As reported by Beebom, writers created key characters based on real conversations with former lawbreakers:
- Brian Heder: an elderly smuggler;
- Cal Hampton: a conspiracy theorist obsessed with secret plots;
- Raul Bautista: a professional bank robber.
All gathered stories were cross-referenced with criminal records and press archives to achieve maximum accuracy.
NPC Individuality and a Reactive Open World
According to a report by GosuGamers, GTA VI will feature the most detailed NPC ecosystem in video game history. Clothing, age, physique, tattoos, and plastic surgery are strictly tied to specific districts—the archetypes of Little Cuba residents differ drastically from tourists in the resort center or inhabitants of the Mount Kalaga reserve.
The studio’s Los Angeles office has a dedicated unit focused exclusively on procedural generation and crowd animation.
The environment’s reaction to the player will be dynamic: openly carrying firearms on the streets will no longer be ignored by passersby, instead triggering fear, screaming, and immediate calls to the police.
Real Artists, Racers, and No Memes
To decorate the streets of the Stockyard district (the game’s equivalent of the famous Wynwood art district), the studio hired over 50 professional street artists to recreate real-world murals and tags in the game.
Active race car drivers were brought in to tune vehicle handling, and Miami stylist Jillian Carr has been overseeing character clothing authenticity since 2023.
Lead writer Michael Viafe emphasized that the team consciously avoided superficial jokes about “Florida Man” internet memes. The goal was to combine the high-octane energy of GTA V with the deep physics simulation and realism of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
