‘The Backrooms 2’ Officially in Development: Kane Parsons Returns to Direct A24’s Record-Breaking Horror

The cinematic phenomenon “The Backrooms” is getting a direct sequel. According to trade publication Dread Central, 21-year-old creator of the original viral web series Kane Parsons has signed a deal with independent studio A24 and will return to the director’s chair for the upcoming sequel.

Record Box Office and Actual Production Status

Social media quickly sparked rumors that filming was already well underway. In reality, the project is in early pre-production: Parsons has only just finalized his deal with the studio, with the final script draft, casting, and budget approval still ahead.

The decision to make a second installment was driven by the financial triumph of the debut film. Released in May 2026, the movie became the highest-grossing project in A24’s history. As reported by Variety, the film earned over $200 million at the global box office in its first ten days alone, surpassing the studio’s previous record holder, the drama “Marty Supreme”.

Expanding the Yellow Hallways Universe

The young director originally designed his feature debut as the foundation for a larger franchise. In an interview with Variety Parsons noted that the first film was intended as an entry point for mainstream audiences into the complex lore of liminal spaces, while deliberately saving the main plot mysteries of the research institute and anomalous levels for a sequel.

Parsons builds his scripts backward from a pre-planned ending, so the team already has a clear direction for the second movie’s plot. While A24 has yet to set a filming start date or release window for “The Backrooms 2”, an official public announcement from the producers is expected in the near future.
