Bannerlord Battles on Crusader Kings III Map: Cult Hybrid Mod Crusader Blade Gets Updated Again

One of the most ambitious fan projects in medieval strategy gaming is back. The Crusader Blade mod, which combines the grand diplomacy of Crusader Kings III with 3D mounted combat from Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, has received a stable public build (version 0.3.6) and continues active development.

How the Two Engines Work Together

Gaming communities initially met the news with viral headlines claiming Paradox Interactive had “added physical battles to the game.” In reality, the project remains a fully independent fan creation built by an enthusiast without involvement from Paradox or TaleWorlds Entertainment.

The utility acts as a software bridge between the two running applications. According to instructions on the Crusader Blade itch.io page, launching requires both officially installed games; the launcher prompts users to select direct file paths to ck3.exe and Bannerlord.exe.

The campaign proceeds at the standard pace of a grand strategy game: players weave intrigues, forge dynastic alliances, grant titles, and declare wars. However, when armies clash on the map, the mod intercepts the process. It reads levy numbers, knight gear quality, and terrain features, then generates a corresponding 3D battle in Bannerlord. Players take manual control of their monarch or commander, and the outcome of the sword fight syncs back into the Crusader Kings save file.

Castle Sieges and Development Status

The project goes beyond adapting to recent system patches. In early builds for Patreon supporters, the creator added full castle sieges, adapting scaling ladders and siege towers for CK3 fortifications.

Enthusiasts are already experimenting with linking the tool to popular total conversion mods, including the A Game of Thrones mod for Westeros. However, such setups remain experimental: guaranteed stability is limited to vanilla versions of both games, as custom armor models can cause crashes when transferring parameters between engines.

Crusader Blade is still in playable beta, but for medieval strategy fans, its return is welcome news: the project fulfills a long-standing dream of combining deep feudal simulation with dynamic first-person melee combat.
