‘South Park’ Renamed ‘South America’ as Creators Mock Trump and Big Tech Concessions

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have announced that the show is being renamed South America ahead of its 29th season. The statement, published on the franchise’s official channels, serves as another biting satire targeting Donald Trump’s initiatives and corporate compliance with White House directives.
Lake ‘America’ and Corporate Subservience
The stunt was triggered by Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America for US federal agencies (the White House previously issued a similar directive regarding the Gulf of Mexico, renaming it the “Gulf of America”). According to the Associated Press, after the government geographic names database was updated, Apple and Google immediately updated labels on their map services for US users.
Parker and Stone responded with a public manifesto. In a statement on the South Park Studios website, the animators sarcastically wrote: “Inspired by the courage and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA.”
Along the way, the creators mocked their parent media company, Paramount, sarcastically calling it “Skydance Capitulation”—a clear nod to its merger with Skydance Media and executive willingness to cave to pressure from above.
Season 29 Schedule and the Real Status of the Rebrand
In an interview with The Washington Post, the creators deadpanned that they are “100 percent committed to the name South America.” However, the move is purely a promotional parody: the show remains listed under its classic name on Comedy Central’s TV schedule and in the Paramount+ streaming catalog.
Season 29 is scheduled to premiere on September 16 on Comedy Central. New episodes will air biweekly (subsequent broadcasts are scheduled for September 30, October 14 and 28, and November 11 and 25), arriving on Paramount+ the day after their TV broadcast. Judging by the initial campaign, the season will focus on sharp satire surrounding the presidential election, trade wars, and media absurdity.
