Greta Gerwig’s New ‘Narnia’ Hits Theaters in February 2027 — Six Weeks Before Its Netflix Release

Netflix is changing how it releases major projects. The upcoming adaptation of “The Magician’s Nephew” from director Greta Gerwig will get a full seven-week theatrical window. As Netflix confirms in its official announcement, the film opens worldwide in theaters on February 12, 2027, and won’t arrive in the streaming service’s catalog until April 2.
The first screenings begin even earlier — on February 10, the film will play exclusively in IMAX theaters. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle distribution outside North America. The release was originally planned for late 2026, but the schedule shifted to allow for a full-scale theatrical run, so the film could earn at the box office and draw a family audience before its at-home online premiere.
A Star-Studded Cast and Music from the ‘Barbie’ Team
To launch the new film universe, Greta Gerwig, who also wrote the screenplay, chose “The Magician’s Nephew” — the chronological prequel to “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” The story will show the birth of Narnia through the eyes of the children Digory and Polly, who open a passage between worlds with the help of magic rings.
The lead roles go to young newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell. As Variety reports, the studio built a powerhouse ensemble around them: the film features Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds and Emma Mackey. The film’s official page notes that the score comes from the duo of Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously worked with Gerwig on the soundtrack for “Barbie.”
Netflix acquired the rights to all seven “Chronicles of Narnia” books back in 2018. The decision to give the first film in the cycle a long exclusive theatrical window shows the company sees the project as a global franchise capable of competing on equal footing with traditional Hollywood blockbusters.
