Hunting Captain Price: Mads Mikkelsen Becomes the Main Antagonist of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Publisher Activision and studio Infinity Ward unveiled a sprawling story trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 at Tokyo Game Show. The highlight of the presentation was the appearance of Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the game’s central antagonist — a mysterious mercenary leader known as The Archer.

Task Force 141 Splinters and an Alliance with Valeria Garza

At the end of the trailer, Mikkelsen’s character addresses Captain John Price directly, promising to destroy everyone he cares about. According to the official Call of Duty blog, The Archer is hunting a secret weapon-of-mass-destruction prototype capable of drastically reshaping the global balance of power.

The campaign develops an unexpected internal crisis within the special forces unit:

• After the finale of Modern Warfare III, Task Force 141 is officially disbanded, and Captain Price himself is declared an international fugitive;
• Former comrades Ghost and Gaz receive strict orders from higher command to capture or kill their fugitive commander;
• Fleeing the manhunt, Price is forced into a temporary alliance with former Mexican cartel leader Valeria Garza.

A second storyline unfolds on the Korean Peninsula, where the game’s script sets the stage for a full-scale war, shown through the eyes of South Korean soldier Park Hyun-jun and his platoon.

Mikkelsen’s Second Game Project and Early Access Dates

For Mads Mikkelsen, this is his second major video game role: he previously played soldier Clifford Unger in Hideo Kojima’s sci-fi action game Death Stranding.

As the industry outlet Beebom notes, bringing in an actor of Mikkelsen’s caliber is meant to restore the cinematic scale of the single-player campaign after criticism of the short, semi-open missions in the previous installment.

According to the official Call of Duty portal, Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Players who place a digital preorder for the Standard or Vault Edition will get access to the campaign a week early, on October 16.
