Mojang Reveals The Sift, the First New Minecraft Dimension in Over 14 Years

Mojang Studios has officially unveiled The Sift — the fourth dimension in mainline Minecraft following the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. It will arrive in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in 2027, and during Minecraft Live, the developers showcased an early version of the new world directly in standard Minecraft for the first time.

The Sift itself will debut earlier — on September 29, 2026, in Minecraft Dungeons II. Players will first be able to fully explore the dimension in the spin-off, while it will arrive in the main Minecraft game later.

In its official Minecraft Live recap, Mojang calls The Sift the first new Minecraft dimension in over 14 years. The last such expansion to the game’s world was the End, added back during the era of the original game.

A Vibrant World with Its Own Creatures and Rules

The Sift looks noticeably different from existing dimensions. Mojang describes it as a vibrant, otherworldly space filled with souls, featuring its own rules and unique creatures — both hostile and friendly.

At least two areas have already been confirmed in Minecraft Dungeons II — Meadow and Carapace. The developers are intentionally keeping the remaining biomes under wraps so players can discover them on their own after launch.

One of the features will be unique Sift “tides” capable of affecting the player character and surrounding creatures. The dimension will also introduce hazardous blocks and new enemy types.

The Sift was first shown in detail in the Minecraft Dungeons II gameplay trailer, where players can access it through mysterious rifts appearing in the Overworld.

The Mainline Minecraft Version Is Still in Development

What players see in Dungeons II may not entirely match the eventual implementation of The Sift in Java and Bedrock.

As Xbox Wire notes, Mojang has yet to reveal how players will access the new dimension in mainline Minecraft or which mechanics, blocks, and creatures will carry over unchanged from Dungeons II.

The version shown during Minecraft Live was explicitly labeled as work in progress, meaning its visual appearance and mechanics may still change.

Nonetheless, the key takeaway is confirmed: The Sift will become a full-fledged fourth dimension in Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027. The update’s exact release date has not yet been announced.

For the franchise, this marks one of the biggest structural changes to the game world in years: instead of another biome or set of new blocks, Mojang is introducing a distinct realm with its own ecosystem, rules, and exploration mechanics.
