Deadlock Gets Biggest Update in Six Months: Valve Overhauls Map and Adds Shadow Merchant

Valve has released a massive patch titled The City Never Sleeps for its multiplayer action game Deadlock. This is the first major content update since January 2026, ending an almost eight-month wait for the community. The developers did not just rebalance character stats—they thoroughly reworked match dynamics, from street layouts to late-game advantage mechanics.
The map overhaul is the main highlight of the update. According to the official update page, Valve updated lane visuals to give different districts more distinct styles. Level geometry has also changed, with redesigned passageways, cover spots, and primary teamfight areas.
Farming has also become more varied. Instead of identical neutral creeps across the entire map, districts are now populated with unique creature types. Choosing a route to clear camps will now depend much more on where the team is currently positioned in the city.
Six Heroes and High-Stakes Broker Deals

The late game now features a new risk-reward mechanic: a hidden merchant known as The Broker. Players can purchase enhanced versions of high-tier items from him, though each powerful buff comes with a mandatory negative effect. The addition aims to speed up drawn-out matches by allowing players to sacrifice defense or health for massive burst damage.
Alongside the patch, Valve introduced six new characters: Baba, Nurse Harrow, Deadman Danny, Violet, Solomon, and Rat King. They will not all be available right away. The developers plan to roll out heroes into the active pool gradually, reprising the successful summer 2025 approach where player voting determined the release order.
UI Overhaul and the Source 2 Myth

The technical side of the game also received improvements. The team updated health bars, kill feeds, and stamina meters while refining the netcode and built-in anti-cheat system.
Following the release, claims surfaced online that Deadlock had moved to a new engine, but that is a misconception. The shooter has run on Source 2 from the start, at least since early closed tests in 2024. The current patch only updates the internal engine branch in use, rather than performing a full-scale engine migration.
The release of The City Never Sleeps confirms that Deadlock remains in an active testing phase. Valve is not hesitant to overhaul core mechanics and level geometry as it searches for the optimal gameplay formula ahead of a full public launch.
