CS2 Gets a Hidden Tamagotchi: Players Discover a Pet System With a 140-Day Life Cycle

The September Rush Hour update brought Counter-Strike 2 not only new modes but also an unexpected mechanic that Valve left out of the official changelog. Players have discovered a hidden virtual pet system in the shooter’s client — now you can raise your own chicken right from the main menu.

You get a pet at random: an egg has started dropping as a weekly level-up reward. Along with it, a Pet Book section appears in the interface — a special diary that tracks the bird’s development and collects memorable photos.

Four stages of growth and the risk of losing your bird

After the update, a rumor began circulating on social media that an adult chicken “lives” in your inventory for 140 days. In fact, that period covers the pet’s entire life cycle, from hatching to the very end.

As players found in Steam discussions and specialized outlets confirm, the process is split into several strict timings:

  • egg incubation;
  • 22 days as a chick;
  • 28 days as a pullet;
  • 90 days as an adult.

All in all, the bird’s life cycle ends on day 140. The pet disappears from the game, leaving its owner with a filled photo album as a keepsake.

Not everyone will manage to raise the bird all the way to the end, though. The mechanic demands regular attention: if a user forgets to feed the chicken or misses a key moment in its development, the pet can vanish early.

For a hardcore competitive shooter, adding a Tamagotchi-style feature is an unusual move. By introducing a virtual pet that needs daily care, Valve is testing new ways to keep its audience engaged and motivate users to open CS2 even on days when they have no time for full matches.
