DC Drops Final Trailer for Body Horror ‘Clayface’ — Premieres October 23

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have unveiled the final trailer for Clayface, a body horror film about the origins of one of Batman’s most unusual foes. The movie hits theaters in North America on October 23, 2026, with an international rollout starting October 21.

The story centers on Matt Hagen, a former street kid from Gotham who managed to become a Hollywood star. After a run-in with a local crime boss leaves him badly disfigured, he agrees to an experimental treatment that initially restores his appearance but then triggers increasingly terrifying physical and psychological changes.

New trailer leans harder into body horror

Over time, Hagen gains the ability to reshape his own body and face, and his attempt to reclaim his old life gradually turns into an obsession with revenge.

The final trailer puts noticeably more emphasis on the film’s horror elements than previous materials did: body deformations, the loss of control over his own appearance, and the hero’s gradual transformation into Clayface.

As the Motion Picture Association notes, the filmmakers deliberately lean into body horror rather than traditional superhero action.

Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini wrote the script

Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen. The cast also includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins, known for “Speak No Evil” and “The Woman in Black,” directed.

Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini wrote the screenplay, with the story itself credited to Flanagan. So calling him the film’s sole screenwriter would be inaccurate.

Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran produced.

Clayface is part of the main DCU

The film is part of the new DCU cinematic universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. It does not, however, belong to Matt Reeves’ separate Batman universe or the Joker films.

Despite being part of a shared superhero franchise, Clayface received an R rating for strong bloody violence, gore, profanity, brief drug use and partial nudity.

That makes the project one of the most overtly horror-driven films in the new DCU.
