Dyson’s $500 Smart Toothbrush Disappears From Sale: Camera-Equipped Gadget Breaks From Water

Just weeks after its long-awaited release, Dyson has effectively halted sales of its first electric toothbrush, the CameraJet. The $500 device has been failing en masse among early buyers. The irony is that a gadget designed for the bathroom is breaking because ordinary water gets inside.
Dyson unveiled the CameraJet on September 1, 2026, after six years of development. The brush has a built-in directional irrigator and a 100,000-pixel macro camera. A machine learning algorithm analyzes 28 frames per second, finds the gaps between teeth and automatically directs a stream of rinse there. According to the manufacturer, 661 engineers worked on the device, and 38 patents were registered for its release.
Claimed IPX7 Protection Didn’t Prevent Leaks
Despite its IPX7 rating, which allows for a 30-minute immersion at a depth of one meter and use in the shower, the complex design failed in real-world conditions.
According to a WIRED investigation, buyers report water inside the removable battery compartment, corroded contacts and charging problems. A test unit from Consumer Reports also broke in less than a day. iFixit specialists suspect the problem lies in a breach of the factory seal on the housing — the gaskets or adhesive may have failed.

Dyson Denies a Mass Recall
Officially, the company has not announced a global recall campaign for the defective devices. Dyson representatives acknowledged a defect in one of the components but stressed that it affected only a small number of early batches. Those devices are now isolated in warehouses.
Meanwhile, on the official CameraJet page, the brush is listed as sold out, and the brand’s press service attributes the product’s absence from stores to surging demand and the need to ramp up production, among other factors. No exact timeline has been given for when the fixed version will return to shelves.
