Fortnitemares 2026 Kicks Off in Fortnite: Freddy Krueger, Five Nights at Freddy’s and New Horror Mechanics

Epic Games has launched Fortnitemares 2026, Fortnite’s annual Halloween event. The update touches Battle Royale, Horde Rush and Reload, adding a new location, horror bosses, weapons, temporary abilities and several major crossovers at once.
One of the event’s main characters is Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street. He appears at the new point of interest Nightmare Neighborhood and serves as a boss.
After defeating him, players get Freddy’s Nightmare – special claws that let them quickly teleport to an opponent and attack in melee.
At the same time, a new Bonerattler SMG that can detect enemies has joined the arsenal, while the Pumpkin Launcher and Wood Stake Shotgun have returned to the game.
Epic detailed all the main changes in the official Fortnitemares 2026 announcement.
Five Nights at Freddy’s Animatronics Can Be Taken Under Your Control
One of the biggest crossovers is Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Animatronic bosses have appeared on the map. After defeating one of them, a player can effectively possess the character and use it against the other players in the match.
The shop also offers themed FNAF outfits with visual damage that appears after taking hits.
Epic has also added a new mechanic, cursed cartridge Overrides – temporary modifiers that can noticeably change the course of a match.
One effect makes a character invisible while sprinting, another increases damage at low health, and yet another lets you disguise the whole squad as Halloween props.
Reload Gets a Reworked Nitemare Island
Horde Rush is back for the event, and Reload will get a major update on October 8.
It will add a reworked Nitemare Island map, along with Stranger Things and Squid Grounds maps.
The list of crossovers will keep growing throughout October. Epic has confirmed cosmetics inspired by Slender Man, Beetlejuice, Predator: Badlands, Hazbin Hotel, The Purge, Black Clover, Hollow Knight, 99 Nights in the Forest, Obsession and Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights.
Wednesday Addams is not on that list. The character appeared in Fortnitemares 2025, so the mentions of a new collaboration with her refer to last year’s event.
In the end, Fortnitemares 2026 is more than just another wave of themed skins. Epic has noticeably changed the gameplay with new bosses, abilities and weapons, and more content will keep arriving throughout October.
