An Anime About Debt and Margin Calls: “FX Warrior Kurumi” Premieres, Telling the Story of a ¥20 Million Trading Loss

On October 1, 2026, Japan saw the premiere of an unusual anime, “FX Warrior Kurumi” (FX Senshi Kurumi-chan). Amid viral social media posts that mistakenly described the premise as a positive story about a schoolgirl hoping to repeat her mother’s success at getting rich, the actual plot turned out to be far darker. It follows a university student who enters the foreign exchange market with a single goal: to recover the 20 million yen her late mother lost.
According to the project’s official website, the drama unfolds in the very first episode: while still in middle school, the protagonist, Fukuga Kurumi, learns of her mother’s catastrophic failure in FX trading. Years later, a grown-up Kurumi decides to immerse herself in price charts to win back her family’s losses.
Market Realities Instead of Magic
The series stands out sharply against typical Japanese animation. Instead of battles with monsters, it shows the harsh financial grind built on real trading mechanisms. Viewers get a clear explanation of floating profit, margin requirements, leverage and forced liquidation of positions.
At the same time, the creators do not romanticize the market at all. Trading is portrayed as an exhausting psychological trap, where a moment of triumph instantly gives way to enormous debts and nervous breakdowns. To keep the script accurate and the terminology correct, the production brought in a professional foreign exchange market consultant, credited on the Kadokawa website.
