Finale Wasn’t the End: Dr. STONE Anime Gets Direct Sequel Adapting Manga Epilogue

Three and a half months after the fourth and nominally final season of the sci-fi anime Dr. STONE concluded, the franchise is unexpectedly returning. At the STONE FES.2026 festival in Yokohama, the creators officially announced a new project titled Dr. STONE: Terraforming. The film will continue the adventures of genius scientist Senku Ishigami and his Kingdom of Science right where the original story left off.

Production was announced on the anime’s official website alongside the first short teaser. In the clip, footage of the stone age’s crowning inventions abruptly cuts out to thunder and lightning, followed by a brand-new line from Senku recorded specifically for the event. Series character designer Yuko Iwasa also shared a commemorative poster celebrating the franchise’s expansion.

Story Based on Manga Volume 27

The new project will not be a spinoff or an alternate retelling. The script adapts a special story arc from Volume 27 of the manga by writer Riichiro Inagaki and artist Boichi. This bonus volume was published after the main story concluded in Weekly Shonen Jump, setting the foundation for civilization’s next technological leap.

The original creators welcomed the anime adaptation warmly. Inagaki admitted that the fourth season’s finale moved him to tears, but Senku’s scientific ambitions cannot be contained to a single planet — judging by the Terraforming subtitle, the characters will be taking on climate engineering and global terraforming challenges.

Movie, Special, or Series

The fourth season, Dr. STONE: Science Future, finished its broadcast run on June 25, 2026, wrapping up the central storyline about overcoming humanity’s mysterious petrification.

Fans shouldn’t expect a full-length fifth season spanning dozens of episodes. As Crunchyroll points out, producers are keeping the exact release format under wraps for now. Since the bonus volume doesn’t have enough source material for an extended TV season, the project will most likely arrive as a feature-length animated film or a 90-minute special (OVA).

The release date, runtime, and animation studio will be announced later, but the main takeaway is official: Senku Ishigami’s scientific journey in anime is set to continue.
