Lamborghini Designer Sells RUF-Modified Porsche 914/6 for €225,000

Automotive designer Luc Donckerwolke has sold a rare 1970 Porsche 914/6 that had previously undergone extensive modernization at the RUF workshop. The car went for €225,000 at a Bring a Trailer auction on September 30, which at the time was roughly $253,000.

That distinction matters: some publications cite a figure of $225,000, but the winning bid was placed in euros.

Donckerwolke bought the car in 2020. He currently serves as president, chief design officer and creative director of Hyundai Motor Group, and before joining the Korean conglomerate he worked at Skoda, Audi, Lamborghini, SEAT and Bentley. At Lamborghini he helped create models such as the Murciélago and Gallardo. Hyundai confirms his current position and career.

The car was modified back in the 1970s

This Porsche was unusual long before Donckerwolke owned it. The car was built in 1970 and delivered new to Belgium in Lemon Yellow.

In 1975, Antwerpse Automobile Company reworked it in the style of the M471 GT racing package: it installed flared steel fenders, reinforced the body and fitted wider 15-inch Fuchs wheels.

Donckerwolke later sent the car to RUF in Pfaffenhausen, where it was essentially rebuilt from the ground up. The car was repainted Grand Prix White and fitted with a fiberglass hood, engine cover, bumpers and rocker panels, along with upgraded brakes and an upgraded oil cooling system.

The stock 2.0-liter flat-six was rebuilt and bored out to 2.4 liters. It received dual-ignition heads, Mahle pistons and cylinders, a lightweight flywheel and a new Friedrich Motorsport exhaust.

The interior gained Recaro seats, a Heigo roll cage and a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel.

The price is high, but the car really is rare

The 914/6 itself is far rarer than the standard four-cylinder Porsche 914. And here, on top of that baseline rarity, come a period GT-style conversion, a serious restoration and RUF upgrades.

As The Drive notes, only a few Porsche 914s have previously sold for more than $150,000 on Bring a Trailer.

In the end, the €225,000 paid for more than just a car owned by a famous designer — it also bought a fairly unusual combination of a factory 914/6, 1970s modifications and a later RUF rebuild.
