“21 Jump Street” Returns to Theaters After 13 Years: Sony Announces 24 Jump Street

Sony Pictures has officially added the next installment of the Jump Street comedy franchise to its release calendar. The third feature film in the series will hit theaters on December 10, 2027. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will return to their lead roles as partners Jenko and Schmidt, with Ice Cube joining them as the explosive Captain Dickson. The undercover duo’s comeback comes a long 13 years after the second film premiered.
As Variety reports, early word of the actors’ reunion surfaced back in the summer, but the studio has now locked the project into its production schedule.
Why 24, not 23?
The most ironic detail of the announcement is the jump in numbering. The title 24 Jump Street directly references a meta joke in the finale of 22 Jump Street, where the credits mocked endless conveyor-belt sequels and showed fake posters for future missions.
At the same time, a would-be 23rd installment did spend a long time in development on paper: Sony planned an ambitious crossover between the franchise and Men in Black under the working title 23 Jump Street (or MIB 23). In that film, the agents would have fought aliens, but the project was ultimately canceled due to the difficulty of reconciling the tone of two completely different universes, and the studio decided to move straight to the 24th installment.
A New Director and Familiar Producers
Rodney Rothman has been entrusted with directing the new film. He knows the franchise well, having co-written the second installment, and is widely known as co-director of the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He wrote the script for the new comedy together with Jonah Hill and Megan Malloy.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creators of the original two films, have stepped away from the director’s chair this time but will continue to oversee the project as producers alongside Neal H. Moritz. The studio is keeping plot details under wraps for now, focusing on pre-production.
