AMC Orders ‘Point Break’ Sequel Series 35 Years After Original Film

AMC has officially greenlit a multi-episode sequel to the iconic 1991 action film Point Break starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. The project will not be a remake; the story will unfold in the same universe three and a half decades after the events of Kathryn Bigelow’s original film. The first season will consist of eight episodes.

A New Generation of “Ex-Presidents” and a Mysterious Surfer

The plot will once again combine daring heists and extreme sports. According to the official AMC synopsis, a new-wave gang of robbers appears in modern times, inspired by the methods of the legendary “Ex-Presidents” (in the original film, a gang of surfers robbed banks wearing masks of American presidents).

To infiltrate the closed community of adrenaline-seeking criminals, the FBI decides to repeat its undercover operation. The agency hires a mysterious former professional surfer with a complex past. Whether this character is an aging agent Johnny Utah or a new hero remains a secret kept by the producers.

Showrunning Team and Keanu Reeves’ Status

Dave Kalstein (Quantico, Treadstone) and Christopher C. Rogers (Halt and Catch Fire, Sugar) have been named co-showrunners and lead writers for the series. Production is overseen by Alcon Television Group, AMC Studios, and media company StudioCanal.

The cast for the project has not yet been assembled, so Keanu Reeves’ involvement, even in a guest cameo role, is not officially confirmed.

According to TheWrap, filming is scheduled to begin in early 2027. The premiere will take place on AMC and the AMC+ streaming service, while European group CANAL+ has acquired broadcast rights in more than 50 countries. The project will be a direct continuation of the original 1990s film, completely ignoring the failed 2015 feature remake.
