IGN Awards Valheim a Perfect 10/10 as It Leaves Early Access With Deep North Biome and Switch 2 Launch

Scandinavian hit Valheim is making a triumphant exit from Early Access. Just a day before the official 1.0 launch, IGN awarded the game a perfect 10 out of 10, calling the Swedish studio Iron Gate’s project a masterpiece and an undisputed survival classic. The full release is scheduled for September 9, 2026—five and a half years after its sensational Steam debut.
Deep North Icy Biome and the Saga’s Finale
The headline feature of version 1.0 is the unlocking of the final story region: Deep North. Rather than a postponed expansion, it arrives as core content in the launch update.
The snow-covered land introduces:
- New resource types, mobs, and ice dungeons;
- The final top-tier armor and weapon set;
- The true final boss, concluding Odin’s trial sequence.
Existing player worlds will remain playable after the update, but in the Valheim 1.0 FAQ, the developers recommend starting fresh, as the frozen locations can only generate properly in unexplored areas of the world map.
Critics praised the game’s fidelity to its original vision: it has not lost its unforgiving edge, requiring players to plan logistics, build fortified bases, and prepare food supplies before every raid. Meanwhile, for those not looking for harsh death penalties, the game now features flexible World Modifiers to tweak damage balance and resource drop rates.
PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 Launch With Full Crossplay
Leaving Early Access comes alongside a global expansion across all major gaming platforms. According to an announcement on the Valheim website, the game will be available on September 9 for PC, Linux, macOS, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
From day one, full crossplay is enabled across all platforms, allowing players to form shared squads on dedicated servers regardless of their hardware.
Since the Valheim Steam page first appeared in February 2021, the project has evolved from a modest indie sandbox made by five enthusiasts into a gold standard for cooperative adventures, and top marks from gaming outlets have cemented its status as the genre’s crowning achievement.
