The Batman 2 Shoot Paused as Matt Reeves Steps Away Temporarily for Family Reasons

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have temporarily halted production on The Batman Part II. The reason is family circumstances affecting director and co-writer Matt Reeves, who had to step away from work for a time. As TheWrap reports, the studios officially confirmed the pause and said they fully support Reeves.

That’s an important clarification amid headlines claiming the director has supposedly “left the project.” What’s happening now is a temporary production halt, not a permanent exit. Warner Bros. and DC Studios have announced neither a search for a new director nor any changes in the film’s leadership.

At the time of the pause, production was already underway in London. Robert Pattinson is still set to return as Bruce Wayne. Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright and other actors from the first film are also expected to appear. According to TheWrap, the new cast also includes Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch.

The pause adds to a long history of delays

The sequel had already gone through several schedule changes. When DC Studios first announced the film in 2023, it was set to arrive as early as October 2025. The premiere was pushed back several times after that, and the official date now stands at February 18, 2028.

So far the studios haven’t said how much the current pause will affect that date. That makes sense: without knowing how long the break will last, it’s too early to judge whether another delay will be needed. But the halt itself makes the schedule less stable, especially for a film that has already drifted noticeably from the original plan.

For Warner Bros. and DC, this is a sensitive moment for another reason: the first Batman film with Pattinson remains one of the most successful standalone takes on the character in recent years, and Reeves’ dark, crime-driven interpretation has already grown into a separate strand within the brand — with a film, the series “The Penguin” and further plans to expand that universe.

So the main news here isn’t that the project is at risk of being shut down, but that its fate is still tied directly to Reeves. The film hasn’t been canceled, the director officially remains in place, but the production timeline will now depend on when he can return to work.
