YouTube to Count Views From First Frame Starting August 24

YouTube has announced a major change to how it counts views. Starting August 24, 2026, views for any video will be recorded on the public counter instantly — as soon as the first frame starts playing.

The new rule eliminates the need to keep viewers watching for a specific duration to log a view. According to The Verge, the change aligns YouTube with algorithms used by TikTok and Instagram Reels, where a view is recorded simply when playback begins.

YouTube previously introduced a similar system for YouTube Shorts in March 2025. A YouTube support post explains that switching to instant tracking will unify metrics across long-form and short-form videos, giving creators an accurate picture of how many times their content is played.

Monetization and the Engaged Views Metric

According to TechCrunch, the faster growth in public view counts won’t automatically boost creator earnings. If a user opens a video and closes it after a couple of seconds, the counter will record a view, but the system won’t count it as monetizable.

To calculate ad payouts and evaluate eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program, the platform will continue relying on the internal Engaged views metric in the YouTube Analytics dashboard. This metric tracks actual audience retention and watch duration.

Existing statistics for previously published videos won’t be recalculated retroactively: views accumulated prior to August 24 will remain unchanged, while new plays will be counted under the updated rules.
