Korea’s ‘iPhone of robot dogs’ Lassie has swappable soft fur and will drag you outside for a walk

Korean design studio Specif.ic has unveiled a concept for a four-legged home companion called Lassie. Unlike most robot dogs from Boston Dynamics or Unitree, which are built for patrolling factories and carrying loads, this one is designed as a full-fledged emotional pet whose main job is to get its owner away from screens and out into the fresh air.

As Yanko Design reports, the creators set out to tackle the modern problems of physical inactivity and digital isolation: instead of keeping users glued to their screens indoors, Lassie encourages shared outdoor walks and socializing with other robot owners.

Fabric covers and modular legs instead of cold metal

Lassie’s key feature is its rejection of aggressive industrial design. The engineers and designers developed a system of soft, swappable covers made from various fabrics that hide the servos and metal frame.

The body is built on a modular principle:

  • Customizable appearance: users can “dress up” the robot, changing the color, texture, and density of the fabric shell depending on the weather or mood;
  • Modular limbs: leg segments can be easily removed and replaced to adapt to different surfaces (city asphalt, grass, or tile);
  • Tactile comfort: the mechanical pet is pleasant to pet and pick up, bringing it closer to real animals.

The “anti-gadget” philosophy

Most modern smart devices compete for people’s screen time, creating the illusion of connection within four walls. Lassie works on the opposite principle: its algorithms mimic a real dog’s need to explore the world, luring people outside without the associated hassles like vet visits or a strict feeding schedule.

For now, Lassie remains a concept: the studio hasn’t revealed the exact battery specs, sensor types, or an estimated price. But the design clearly shows how consumer robotics could evolve from utilitarian tools into aesthetic, friendly lifestyle devices.
