AI Hub Hugging Face Explores Sale at $13 Billion Valuation

Hugging Face, the world’s leading platform for open-source AI developers, is exploring a potential sale at a valuation of $13 billion or more. According to Business Insider, the company’s management has already hired an investment bank to gauge interest from potential buyers.

If a deal closes on these terms, the platform’s valuation will have tripled in just three years. In August 2023, the company was valued at $4.5 billion during a $235 million funding round backed by Nvidia, Google, Amazon, Qualcomm, and Salesforce.

Sixfold Growth and the “GitHub for AI” Status

Hugging Face serves as the primary global hub for sharing machine learning code, datasets, and open weights. Over the past three years, the number of hosted models on the platform has grown sixfold, from 500,000 to 3 million. The number of datasets has surpassed 1 million, and interactive Spaces apps have reached 1.44 million, with a total user base of 13 million registered users.

Nearly all industry leaders—from Meta, Google, and Microsoft to DeepSeek and research labs—host their open-source models on the company’s servers. The platform monetizes through enterprise licenses, dedicated training compute, and paid cloud hosting for models.

The Impact of the OpenRouter Acquisition and the Question of Independence

The talks intensified alongside another major infrastructure deal: payments giant Stripe acquired AI aggregator OpenRouter for an estimated $7.5–8 billion. This transaction set a new pricing benchmark for platforms acting as intermediaries between AI creators and software developers.

The main hurdle for any acquisition of Hugging Face remains the platform’s neutrality. The service has earned the trust of the open-source community by remaining independent of specific tech giants. An acquisition by any major tech player could trigger conflicts of interest for competing corporations that rely on the hub’s infrastructure.

Expansion into Robotics and Leadership’s Vision

The company is actively expanding into physical AI, having created the open-source software library LeRobot and completed the acquisition of humanoid robot developer Pollen Robotics.

CEO Clément Delangue previously emphasized that the market is heading toward a cooling of interest in simple conversational chatbots, which is why the company is betting on multimodal systems, biology, and robotics.

The sale talks are in the early stages of market exploration, and Hugging Face representatives have not yet provided any official comments.
