Cult JRPG Terranigma Returns After Over 30 Years: Super Nintendo Classic Coming to PC and Consoles

Publisher Clear River Games, in partnership with Square Enix, has announced an official re-release of the classic RPG Terranigma. Released in 1995, the 16-bit era classic will come to modern platforms for the first time, including Nintendo Switch 2, and will also mark its first official release in North America.

The game is scheduled for release in 2027 both digitally and on physical media.

Preserving the Pixel Aesthetic and Bringing Back Original Creators

The developers opted against a full 3D remake, retaining the original pixel art, sprites, and isometric environments of the Super Nintendo era. However, the project will feature updated artwork and a soundtrack by the original creators. Original character designer and manga artist Kamui Fujiwara is participating in the re-release.

According to Gematsu, the title is considered the pinnacle of studio Quintet‘s work and concludes an unofficial philosophical trilogy that also includes Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia.

A World-Creation Story and Real-Time Combat

The game begins on a hollow Earth divided into an outer world of light and an inner world of darkness. Main character Ark accidentally opens a sealed door in the underground village of Krista, freezing the villagers and triggering a massive mission to save the planet. Players will practically recreate Earth from scratch: bringing continents, plants, animals, human civilization, and technology back from nonexistence.

Terranigma’s combat system features real-time action, with the protagonist wielding a spear to execute thrusts, dashes, slide attacks, and mid-air strikes without transitioning to turn-based battle screens.

Historic US Debut, Physical Releases, and Gamescom Showcase

As Push Square notes, following its 1995 Japanese launch and 1996 European release, the game never made it to the US due to the closure of publisher Enix’s American branch. The new release will right that historical wrong after more than 30 years.

Collector’s physical editions for consoles will be released by Limited Run Games. The first public playable demo will be featured at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne.

Terranigma launches in 2027 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2.
