New Resident Evil Movie Will Feature First-Person POV: Details on Adaptation From Director of Barbarian

Sony Pictures is rebooting the Resident Evil film franchise with director Zach Cregger. The filmmaker confirmed that the movie will feature first-person shots and over-the-shoulder perspectives, mimicking the gameplay of modern Capcom horror games, with a theatrical release set for September 18, 2026.
The project will be a standalone film in the universe and is not connected to Paul W. S. Anderson’s previous adaptations.
Game Perspective and Survival Mechanics
In an interview with GamesRadar+, director Zach Cregger (Barbarian) explained that he abandoned the idea of shooting the entire film solely through a first-person lens: the movie will alternate first-person shots with a dynamic over-the-shoulder view of the protagonist.
The narrative mirrors the progression logic of a video game: the protagonist starts with a basic pistol, gradually finds a shotgun and a more powerful arsenal, struggles with severe ammunition shortages, and uses canonical healing items from the game series.
Raccoon City Storyline Set Alongside Resident Evil 2
According to the official PlayStation Blog, the film’s plot will take place in Raccoon City alongside the events of Resident Evil 2.
The main character is Brian, a civilian medical courier played by Austin Abrams (Euphoria, Weapons). The character must deliver an urgent payload through an epidemic-ravaged city. Iconic characters like Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield will not be at the center of the story.
The runtime will be about 90 minutes, covering the events of a single snowy night almost in real time and kicking off non-stop action as early as eight minutes in.
