New Resident Evil Movie Poised to Break 16-Year Franchise Record with Projected $50M Opening

The upcoming cinematic reboot of the Resident Evil gaming universe from director Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) is tracking toward an all-time record among Capcom adaptations. According to updated box office tracking, the film could gross between $35 million and $50 million during its opening weekend in US and Canadian theaters.

Topping the Milla Jovovich Era

Even the conservative $35 million low-end projection would secure the biggest domestic debut in the franchise’s history. The previous North American record has stood since 2010, when Resident Evil: Afterlife opened to $26.6 million.

Early long-range tracking from Boxoffice Pro originally projected a more modest $30M–$40M debut. However, strong advance ticket sales prompted analysts to raise the ceiling to $50 million.

A key driver behind the anticipation is the director’s track record. Zach Cregger’s previous psychological horror film, Weapons, opened domestically to 43.5 million and went on to gross around 270 million worldwide. A Raccoon City Nightmare Rather Than a Direct Game Adaptation

The filmmakers chose not to do a literal shot-for-shot adaptation of a specific numbered game or replicate Paul W. S. Anderson’s action-heavy formula. In the official Sony Pictures synopsis, the project is described as an auteur reimagining of the universe with a completely fresh take on canonical events.

The screenplay was penned by Cregger alongside Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4). Austin Abrams (Euphoria) stars as Brian, a medical courier trapped in Raccoon City at the height of the viral outbreak who must survive one harrowing night among the infected. The cast also features Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis.

According to Collider, international rollouts begin on September 16, followed by a North American theatrical release on September 18, 2026. If robust presales translate into strong opening-weekend momentum, the franchise will see its biggest box office surge in two decades.
