Aptera Solar EV Confirms Up to 76 km of Free Daily Range in Independent TÜV Tests

The three-wheeled Aptera solar electric vehicle has completed independent solar charging efficiency verification with certification organization TÜV Rheinland. Body-integrated solar cells generated and fed up to 4.75 kWh of energy into the traction battery in a single daylight period, equivalent to an estimated 76 km of range without plugging into an outlet.
The testing verified the feasibility of free parking-lot solar charging under direct sunlight.
Real-World TÜV Rheinland Test Results

TÜV specialists measured the net energy delivered directly to the battery after accounting for all losses in the inverters and controllers.
Testing in sunny California confirmed performance across three setup scenarios:
- All-day stationary parking: generated 4.23 kWh (around 68 km of range), exceeding the engineers’ baseline benchmark of 4 kWh;
- Single vehicle reorientation at noon: output rose to 4.40 kWh (71 km);
- Optimal rear angle tilt toward the sun: peak output reached 4.75 kWh (76 km).
Aerodynamics, 700W Solar Cells, and the Battery Lean Concept

The two-seater EV features an ultralight teardrop composite body with integrated solar panels outputting roughly 700W. The main key to its long range is low energy consumption: the model’s estimated efficiency is around 100 Wh per mile (roughly 6.2 kWh per 100 km).
According to InsideEVs, the initial Launch Edition version also comes equipped with a traction battery providing 644 km of range (400 miles) and a NACS connector for fast-charging stations. For drivers with an average daily urban commute of 30–40 km, the built-in solar cells can fully cover battery consumption while parked outdoors during the day.
Preparing for Mass Production

According to Aptera Motors, the startup has ordered body components, chassis frames, and suspension parts for the assembly of its first 40 pre-production vehicles, scheduled to begin in Q4 2026.
The company has already received a certificate of conformity from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and accumulated over 50,000 customer reservations.
