CD Projekt RED Raises The Witcher 3 System Requirements: GTX 1660, 12GB RAM, and Windows 11 Now Required

Developer CD Projekt RED has updated the official system requirements for the role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ahead of the release of its free Remastered update and the “Songs of the Past” expansion. The minimum specs now require a GeForce GTX 1660 graphics card and 12GB of RAM, while traditional hard drives (HDDs) and Windows 10 are no longer officially supported.

The bump in system requirements stems from integrating modern graphical features and preparing the engine for 2027 content.

New Minimum and Recommended Requirements

To run the game at 1080p, the developer specified the following minimum requirements:

• Operating system: 64-bit Windows 11 only;
• Processor: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600;
• Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1660 (6GB), Radeon RX 5500 XT (8GB), or Intel Arc A580;
• Memory: 12GB RAM (up from 6GB for the 2015 original);
• Storage: 70GB SSD with DirectX 12 support.

The recommended configuration on the game’s Steam page lists Core i7-8700K / Ryzen 5 3600X CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and graphics cards such as the GeForce RTX 2060 Super, Radeon RX 6600 XT, or Intel Arc B580.

Dropping HDDs Entirely and Ending Windows 10 Support

The studio has officially removed mechanical hard drives from the list of supported storage devices: an SSD is now strictly mandatory to prevent asset streaming hitches. Support for the legacy DirectX 11 graphics API has also been completely phased out in the game’s main branch.

Dropping Windows 10 follows the end of Microsoft’s mainstream support and the gradual shift of GPU drivers to maintenance mode. The game won’t immediately stop launching on Windows 10, but the developer is halting build testing on the OS and will no longer guarantee fixes for system issues.

Legacy Rollbacks for Older PCs and Remastered Release Date

Players with PCs that do not meet the new specs can roll back to the previous version of the game via the beta branch menu on Steam and GOG, maintaining access to the original build without the new content.

According to an announcement on the official The Witcher portal, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered will launch on September 29, 2026 as a free update for owners on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It will also make its debut on the Battle.net launcher and the Nintendo Switch 2 hybrid console.
