Digital Foundry’s GTA VI gameplay analysis: 1440p, stable 30 FPS, and unprecedented simulation on PS5

Technical experts at Digital Foundry have published a detailed breakdown of the 27-minute gameplay demo of Grand Theft Auto VI, recorded by the developers on a standard PlayStation 5. The experts called it one of the most impressive examples of real-time rendering they’ve ever seen, noting that the game runs at 1440p with a stable 30 frames per second, featuring full ray tracing and unprecedented CPU load.

1440p resolution and spatial upscaling

According to the analysts, the base native rendering resolution on PS5 is around 1440p. In the current build, they found no obvious traces of temporal upscalers like AMD FSR 2 or classic TAA Upscaling.

Based on the anti-aliasing characteristics, Digital Foundry suspects the use of a relatively simple spatial scaling algorithm to 4K. As a result, the final image sometimes looks slightly soft, and on small wires, grilles, and foliage, you can notice geometric shimmering (aliasing).

Smooth frame pacing and the status of a 60 FPS mode

Despite the immense graphical density, the demo showed nearly perfect frame pacing with stable 30 FPS. Unlike the release versions of GTA IV and GTA V on previous consoles, there are no sharp performance drops during explosions or high-speed driving.

The 30 FPS target was also confirmed by Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson in a conversation with YouTube blogger Davy Jones: at this stage of development, all console versions are aimed at 30 FPS. The possibility of adding a performance mode (60 FPS) is currently not guaranteed even for the PS5 Pro and requires further consultations with the engineering team.

Ray tracing and next-gen physics

The project’s main technical achievement is hardware-accelerated global illumination based on ray tracing (RTGI):

  • Lighting and reflections: ray tracing calculates indirect light in interiors and on streets, and RT reflections are applied to the vast majority of smooth surfaces, glass, and car bodies;
  • Hair and fabrics: a comprehensive strand-based hair simulation has been implemented with physically correct shading for straight, wavy, and curly hairstyles;
  • Anatomical physics: subsurface scattering on skin, secondary muscle movements, and the behavior of multi-layered clothing have been reworked.

CPU load: why 60 FPS will be a challenge even for PC

The main barrier to doubling the frame rate, according to experts, is not the graphics chip but the extreme load on the central processor. The frame continuously processes dense car traffic, hundreds of unique NPCs, and background city events that continue to simulate far beyond the player’s field of view.

As noted by GamesRadar+, to create such realistic pedestrian behavior, Rockstar allocated an entire studio division in Los Angeles, and the company’s total staff has more than doubled since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2.

According to analysts, console chips based on AMD Zen 2 architecture hit a ceiling at 30 frames, and the future PC version may require top-tier processors with increased cache, such as AMD Ryzen X3D series, to achieve stable 60 FPS. From the PS5 Pro version, experts primarily expect a higher native resolution and improved quality of RT reflections.

Release date and preload

In the official report from publisher Take-Two, it is confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at a price of $79.99. Preload of digital copies for pre-order customers will begin on November 12.
