‘Furry on the Loose’: Journalists Reveal Wild Random Events and Smart NPCs in GTA VI

Journalists from gaming media Kinda Funny Games, who attended a closed three-hour demo of Grand Theft Auto VI at Rockstar North’s office, have revealed new details about the living world simulation of the state of Leonida. During a nighttime drive along the highway, a police helicopter warned citizens over a loudspeaker about an escaped “furry,” and the behavior of non-player characters (NPCs) proved so autonomous that it surprised even the developers.
Police Siren and Strange Road Incidents
As host Andy Cortez recounted in an interview with The Dan Le Batard Show, during the closed presentation a patrol helicopter appeared above the highway with its searchlight on, and a message came through:
“There’s a furry on the loose.”
The journalists asked a Rockstar employee to head toward the scene, but due to the lack of nearby exits from the elevated road, they couldn’t reach the source of the alert. They didn’t see the offender in the mascot costume on screen, but the episode served as a vivid example of the background event system that generates incidents independently of the player’s route.

Robbing a Store in a Race with Bots
Random events in GTA VI can overlap. In another demo episode, Jason prepared for an armed robbery of a roadside store: he put on a bandana and approached the counter, but at that very moment, an unrelated NPC burst in and started robbing the cash register before the protagonist could.
According to Cortez, the situation wasn’t scripted — the unexpected intersection of algorithms puzzled even Rockstar’s engineers. The player could intervene, eliminate the rival, take the cash themselves, and then hack the back room to physically destroy the tape with CCTV footage.
Evolution of Red Dead Redemption 2 Mechanics and Realistic Police
According to a roundup of details from ComicBook.com, the developers have significantly reworked the AI of pedestrians and the behavior of law enforcement:
- Dialogue system: the interaction system from RDR2 has evolved — pedestrians react to open weapon carrying, notice surveillance, and get upset if the player eavesdrops on their conversations;
- Team in Los Angeles: a dedicated studio division is responsible for facial expressions, reaction variety, and crowd behavior;
- End of cop “telepathy”: police don’t instantly learn about a crime if the player manages to neutralize witnesses before they call 911;
- Evidence and surveillance: patrols remember the car model, appearance, and clothing of the attacker; abandoned vehicles are sent to an impound lot; and cop icons are no longer constantly highlighted on the radar, forcing players to rely on mirrors and siren sounds.
Other Mechanics and Release
During the three-hour closed session, journalists also noted the return of the need to refuel vehicles, the presence of real business hours for stores, storing a heavy arsenal in the trunk of a personal car, and losing some cash upon arrest or death.
In the official announcement from Rockstar Games, it’s confirmed that the global release of Grand Theft Auto VI will take place on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
