SteamDB Joins Nexus Mods, Keeps Independence and Free Access

The leading independent database for Valve’s store is changing hands. The creator of SteamDB has announced a merger with Nexus Mods, with both platforms joining the Chosen group. Despite the deal, the project will keep its own brand, separate website, and familiar functionality.
SteamDB launched in 2013 as an enthusiast project by developers xPaw and Marlamin, eventually becoming a key analytics tool for players and gaming media. In recent years, the project has been maintained solely by xPaw. In the official SteamDB blog, the developer admitted that maintaining the massive database alone led to burnout, so earlier this year he began looking for a reliable partner to take over the infrastructure.
Current Features Stay Free
The new management quickly addressed the community’s main concerns about potential paywall monetization. In the published FAQ, they emphasize that all existing SteamDB features will remain freely accessible, and no Nexus Mods account will be required to use the site. The official browser extensions will continue to receive updates.
The team has no plans to place traditional banner ads on the database pages. Instead, financial sustainability will come from partner integrations and referral links for game purchases. In theory, only brand-new features developed in the future could become paid.
What This Means for Modding Fans
The deal brings direct practical benefits to Nexus Mods users. SteamDB stores a detailed history of all manifests, builds, and patches in Steam. This information is planned to be integrated into mod managers.
With the database integration, modding software will be able to match the installed game version with mod builds and warn users in advance about developer patches that could break installed mods. The team also plans to launch an official public API.
Service creator xPaw will remain with the team for a transition period of several months to hand over processes to new engineers and help transform the project from a solo development into a fully scalable service.
